Why Should Businesses Engage in Social Media?

I think social media is still confusing to a lot of people. As a Gen Y blogger and social media enthusiast (not to mention a consultant to small businesses), I realize that my perspective on the necessity of social media isn’t always so clear-cut to my clients, friends, or coworkers.

Mostly, people ask me the obvious questions – yes, even in 2010. Questions like, But why do I need it? And do I have to engage once I have it? Who has the time for this stuff, anyway?

I know what they’re thinking: “Because that seems like an awful lot of work – not to mention a Human Resources, IT, and personal privacy issue…” 

“And what about my legal team? They’re going to be thrilled, huh?”

They’re also increasingly concerned, from a sales point of view, about implementing analytics that give a clear picture of what social media is doing for their business. Retweets are great, goes the gist, but sales are still better. Prove that it works!

And the doubters’ concerns aren’t wrong, per se – it’s still true that social media can be an enormous time sink and resource-waster if you’re not implementing it according to a plan. Strategy is a must, as with rolling out any other brand-new business tool; understanding your own goals is the first step.

With this in mind, I’ve started compiling outside resources, above and beyond my own sales pitch, that help to answer some of those pressing questions.

I want to share some of my favorite links, articles and PDFs or JPEGs with you (graphic interpretations are the best: they’re graphic and easily printable for your clients, friends, and colleagues) to help explain and illuminate business owners or employees on the virtues, and the strategy, behind the use of social media.
